Unionville’s Big Facelift
Good Morning Markhamites,
We’re back! I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer. For those a bit apprehensive about school around the corner, here are some tips on how to combat back-to-school anxiety.
Andre De Grasse and Joshua Liendo made Markham super proud at Paris 2024. Andre became one of the most decorated Olympians alongside Penny Oleksiak, and Joshua won a Silver Medal in the 100m Butterfly final.
In the last edition, I asked markhamites why they chose Markham and what they loved about it in a survey. I got some great responses; however, due to the limitations of Substack, I’m unable to see exactly who left the responses. If you did fill out the survey, would you mind sending an email to themarkhamite@substack.com and let me know what story about how you decided to reside in Markham was yours? I’ll ensure you’re entered to win the $50 gift card from Rouge River Brewery.
If you still haven’t entered, you can do so here. I’ll pull a winner next week.
Today’s reading time is less than 4 minutes.
Main Street Unionville’s Glow Up.
The first phase will see infrastructure improvements, including new water mains, storm sewers and road resurfacing from Carlton Road to the train tracks. This is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Starting in spring 2025, the second phase will focus on improvements like sidewalks, street lighting and pedestrian crosswalks; all meant to enhance one of Markham’s most unique areas while maintaining its old charm.
Throughout the restoration, all shops will remain open and accessible. Because this is a long-term project, look for the city and the Unionville BIA as they launch a campaign to support the local shops during construction.
