Talking Trash in Markham
Good Morning Markhamites,
We mentioned this in a story a few months ago about traffic calming measures; the city has finally opened up a public consultation for traffic calming measures on Carlton Road between McCowan and Kennedy, north of the mall. The latest is that they wanted to condense the number of traffic lanes down to two from four on a busy throughway. You can click the link above to have your say.
Additionally, tonight, the Markham Village Community Centre will host a public consultation on traffic calming on Main Street Markham north of Bullock to 16th Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m.
Today’s read time is less than 4 minutes.
Does Markham have a littering problem?
A Reddit post from last week was picked up by Markham’s official Instagram account about people excessively littering in parks and added some refreshing language for what is a city run account.
The culprits left their trash beside the garbage but not in it after what looks like a party at the splash pad at Woodbine and 19th.
Last week, the city had to install a sign to stop repeat offenders from littering in a public park in Cornell. The culprits got creative and attempted to hide their trash in a nearby tree.
Public spaces are for everyone, and treating our parks as dumps way shows immense disrespect for other city residents and workers. In response to the elevated level at which this public dumping is becoming more common, the city is looking to remove all garbage bins from all public parks.
The city is reminding people that trash bins are in city parks as a courtesy to all park users and should be used. If they are full, the City asks that you take your trash home and wait for curbside pickup on whatever day of the week they come to your neighbourhood.
To that point as well, the city reminds dog owners that the garbages in parks is not for dog poop and that if they have poop bags, to take them home with them to dispose of in the green bin.
The city recently made it easier for bylaw officers to charge fines to people who have let trash accumulate on their property after garbage days. Therefore, they are also telling residents that whenever possible, they should take their trash out on the day of rather than putting it out the night before so winds or animals don’t get at it and you’re stuck with a trash lawn and a city fine.
Additionally, if anyone is organizing community clean-ups, we’d be happy to amplify them.
Clean up your act, Markham.
