Primary Care Shortage in York, Little Native Hockey League kicks off this weekend.
Good Morning Markhamites,
,
Did you know Markham has its own version of Groundhog Day? It’s called “When the city closes the outdoor skating rink at City Hall” day
With temperatures not expected to be consistently cold enough for the rest of the year, The city is officially shutting down the City Hall skating rink for the season a bit early. Under normal circumstances, they are usually able to keep it out long enough to get through March break.
On an unrelated note, are anyone else’s tulips starting to bloom?

An estimated 286,000 York Region residents won’t have a family doctor by 2026
A report by the Chief of Family Medicine at Markham Stouffville Hospital paints a bleak picture of access to primary care in the Markham and York Region. Data from the Ontario College of Physicians shows that 148,000 York Region Residents are currently without a family doctor and as things stand, we are on track to have that number almost double by 2026.
What’s the root cause of this? According to Dr. Alan Grill:
The shortage stems from several factors, including administrative burdens, lack of team supports and compensation that has not kept pace with inflation.
When it comes to administrative burdens, Grill cited issues like complicated insurance forms, unnecessary sick notes and chasing and competing for referrals as issues that are all wasting valuable time.
“Why am I giving patients sick notes when they have a cold?” he said. “Let’s trust our employees — stop with the short-term sick notes.”
YRP installing always-on CCTV cameras at three major Markham Intersections.
In an effort to be able to provide more support for crime prevention, improve investigative capabilities and enhance community safety, York Regional police are rolling out a CCTV system at three major Markham intersections - Warden and Hwy 7, Woodbine and Hwy 7 and Warden and Steeles. Signs will be posted alerting residents in the area that they are being recorded. However, YRP emphasizes that this is not active monitoring, but they can go back and reference the footage to assist in investigations.
They used a data-driven approach to determine the areas in the city with the highest need, Identifying seven other major areas in the York region in addition to the ones in Markham.
