Happy New Year, Markham; here's some tax increases.
Hello Markhamites, and Happy New Year!
I started the Markhamite a little over three months ago now. I am beyond happy and humbled to see it grow beyond some neighbourhood friends and family. I want to thank everyone who has subscribed, read and referred friends and neighbours to the newsletter. Your support means everything.
I’m running a reader survey to get your thoughts on what’s working and what you’d like to see more of. If you fill out this survey, one lucky entrant will win a $25 Gift card to Fresh Heads Farm Shop!
As a reminder, our Referral Campaign is ongoing, Refer three friends, and we’ll donate to the Markham Food Bank.
Today’s read is about 5 minutes.
York Region Passes 4.5B Budget. Leading to a 3.75% Increase in regional taxes for residents, on average about $105 per household.
With the start of the new year comes budget approvals for the region and the city. While the city has until the end of February to finalize their budget, the region has to have it in place before the municipalities can have their crack at it. Some highlights include:
Hiring 46 new police and community liaison officers to support our growing population
Increased budget for infrastructure, including road maintenance
Delivering 123 billion litres of clean, safe water
Supporting the creation of 400 community housing units.
Installing Fibre to serve more rural areas of York Region with high-speed internet.
The budget also includes a 1% rapid transit/infrastructure levy as they begin to fast-track BRT projects and pay for the region’s share of the Yonge north subway extension.
This will result in a municipal tax increase of 3.75% or on average $105 per homeowner. According to the region, 82 cents from each tax dollar goes to supporting frontline programs for the region.
