Markham says "it’s ready for winter"
Plus, The MSH Foundation fortune ball raises over $800,000 for the Hospital and more.
Good Morning Markhamites,
We have a quick read for you today. A piece on Markham’s updated winter maintenance preparedness and the Markham Stouffville Hospital Fortune Ball that raised $800,000. There are also a lot of excellent community notes below, so check them out.
The city says they’re “Ready for Winter.”
With the unsettled winter weather coming this week and next, Markham is ready for winter operations with a newer, bigger fleet. Markham’s winter fleet services over 2,200 km of roadways and 1,100 km of sidewalks within 16-24 hours of a snowfall. This includes many parks and paved pathways throughout the city.
Here are a few things you might not know about Markham’s winter maintenance programs:
Markham has a salt maintenance plan to protect our green spaces and watersheds in the winter. Only a specific weight of salt or salt/sand mix can be applied per kilometer of road.
Snow will always be pushed to the right side of the road due to the orientation of the snow plows. Houses and properties on the inside corner of an intersection will see more snow accumulation.
Pushing or blowing snow onto roads and laneways is illegal, So be a good neighbour.
Markham also operates 6 City-Run outdoor skating rinks pending weather conditions; those include Civic Centre, Milliken Mills, Victoria Square, Huntington Park, Markham Museum and Milne Dam Park.
Civic Centre Ice rink will open December 1st and is usually open weather permitting until mid-March.
Markham Stouffville Hospital Fortune Ball raises over $800,000

The event was presented by TD, with the lead sponsor, Green Communities Inc., playing a central role. MSH Foundation put on this gala to partner with the local Chinese Canadian community to inspire business leaders and philanthropists to “help bring abundant blessings to MSH through the sharing of their good fortune and prosperity.”
Thanks to sponsors, attendees, donors, Volunteers and the community, the event raised over $800,000 for state-of-the-art imaging equipment and surgical tools, enhancing patient care for years.
