Housing prices, Green lasers, Chinese Heritage Month.
Good Evening Markhamites,
I’m sending this out a bit earlier than usual because if you’re interested - CBC’s Metro Morning will have a live-to-air broadcast from Cafe De Hong Kong from 5:30 AM until 8:30 AM Thursday, and they are looking for people to stop in and say hi.
Second, I want to welcome all the new subscribers over the past week from a reader referral by Susan Gates. Susan, I don’t know what you told everyone to get them to sign up, but I cannot express my gratitude enough for you helping The Markhamite grow.
We have a referral incentive structure set up to donate to the Markham Food Bank regularly, but it only goes up to 18 referrals and covers a $30 donation. Since you've gone over and above that, I figured reciprocating was the right call. I've donated $100 to the Markham Food Bank for your efforts.
If you want to be like Susan or just think you can do better than her on the leaderboard, click the button below to share.

Markham declares February to be Chinese Heritage Month.
Regional Councillor Joe Li put A motion before the city council last week to proclaim February as Chinese Heritage Month.
According to Councillor Li:
This motion will contribute to the cultural diversity and inclusivity of our region, fostering unity and appreciation for the Chinese heritage. I believe that this motion, once approved, will strengthen the cultural fabric of the City of Markham and foster a deeper sense of unity and understanding among its residents. I urge all members of the council to support this motion and collectively celebrate the rich tapestry of our community.
The motion was carried unanimously, except Ward 5 Councillor Keyes, who abstained.
The average house price in Markham is up to $1.27 Million. However, it has remained relatively flat year over year.
According to TREB, January saw an increase in the average purchase price of a home in Markham by 3% month over month. The increases were across the board in all kinds of homes, from condos to detached homes. However, the average price remains flat year over year.
On that note, a study by Point2homes.ca noted that Markham is the second worst city in the country for depreciating home equity in homes purchased since 2022. What this means is that If someone purchased a home in Markham in 2022, they likely would be looking at a loss of value on the sale if they were to list today.
