Good Morning Markhamites
,
Today is the first day it’s legal to sell beer and wine in convenience stores and gas stations across Ontario. 39 Stores across Markham now have beer and wine available. While the City of Markham chose to opt out of Cannabis sales in 2016, no such avenue exists for municipalities regarding alcohol sales.
Anyway, if you need a couple of beers, here’s a map of where they are.
Speaking of things that are also open for business this week, After looking at the city sign that says “future home of York University” for years. York’s Markham Campus finally opened its doors to the first cohort of students this week. If they take that sign down, is the “ future home of Amazon HQ2” sign below it? (that’s a deep cut).

In August, I asked readers to answer 3 open-ended questions about Markham. Some are short, and some are sweet, but they all paint a picture of a City that believes in itself and its people. I wanted to share some of the responses below.
How did you decide to reside in Markham?
a. My parents chose to settle in Markham in 1985. We moved here from Scotland.
b. It was January 1986. We lived in downtown Toronto. It was noisy, the air pollution was bad, and we witnessed a lot of crime. When we saw that a builder in Markham was offering a low interest rate on mortgages, we decided to buy a house there. We were thinking of having kids and wanted a more family-friendly area. We moved in on Labour Day weekend. Fourteen years later, we bought another house and stayed in Markham.
c. I loved the idea of being in a city close to the country.
d. I was born here. I moved away for Uni and my 20s and came back in my 30s to raise a kid and be close to work and family.
What makes you most proud about being from Markham
a. It’s clean, has industry, and there’s always something to do
b. It's a very diverse place. You meet many people from all over the world. It retains its rural roots. I like being able to drive up the street and go to a farmer's market.
c. It's diverse, has green space, and is safe.
d. High-tech capital, diversity, taxes under control, community centres and spaces, Main Street Unionville and ambitious growth planning
What do you want Markham to be known for in 15 years?
a. Still a great community to live, work and play. It is ideal for families to grow old.
b. Balanced growth while honouring the environment and preserving its agricultural heritage.
c. Film Studio, High tech capital, diversity
d. An excellent place to live for all people.
e. Big city with a small-town feel.
