Full time for Fletcher's Fields
Good Morning Markhamites,
Anthony Farnell, chief meteorologist at Global News, suggests that outside of the first week of March, Winter is essentially over. Looks like the groundhog was right earlier this month.
The public was invited to comment on the 2024 budget last week. Most residents who spoke welcomed the rate increase, which still keeps Markham one of the lowest tax rates in the GTA. Council will meet again on Feb 28th to debate the budget and, in all likelihood, approve it.

Markham’s Historic Fletchers Fields are set to close at the end of the rugby season in October.
Fletcher’s Fields, a six-pitch rugby facility on 19th Avenue just east of the 404, has hosted countless international and domestic rugby matches in its almost 60 years of existence. It hosted international warm-up matches against Argentina, England, Ireland, Wales, the U.S., and Japan. It is home to 6 competitive rugby clubs in the area, including The Markham Irish. It was named after Dennis Fletcher, A rugby enthusiast who helped grow the game in Ontario. And at the end of the 2024 rugby season, it’s set to close its gates for good.
But not without a sendoff - The 2024 “Summer Celebration of Rugby.” From May to October, a jam-packed schedule celebrating the game and the place that made its mark on Ontario sports.
As for the City’s plans for the space, at this time, it’s unclear, but considering the provincial priority is to fast-track housing, It’s only a matter of time.
