Good morning Markhamites,
Did you know you can take your dogs on walks through Marshalls, Home Depot, and Pet Smart to get them exercise in this heat? You can.
We have a quick update as it was a much slower news week.
Today’s reading time is less than 2 minutes.
Cornell is growing up.
While it might be nearing summer break for some, City council and their committees are kicking it into high gear. Some new recommendations came down from Tuesday’s development services committee meeting, including approving projects that prioritize housing growth and development in Cornell. Here’s two projects headed to council for approval.
Northwest Corner of Bur Oak and Highway 7
This project is recommended to be approved by the development services committee and headed to the council for final approval. This consists of four high-density towers with 1785 units, and to the north, beside the fire department, is a new YRDSB elementary school. There is also a promise that some of the units in this development will be affordable housing. The planning committee noted and addressed some minor hang-ups, most notably that they intentionally included less parking ( for residents, visitors and businesses) to encourage transit usage and walkability in the area and that this type of density is required to support retail.
Moving further west, the committee has recommended that this development be approved and sent to the council. This phase includes 2,337 units in the proposed buildings, with 24 marked as affordable housing. The proposed park adjacent to the community centre parking structure will also be accessible by the new YRDSB elementary school.
While this is a significant change for residents of the city’s easternmost neighbourhood, this type of density is required to address the changing needs of current and future residents of Markham.
