Markham District Energy utilizes the Canada Growth Fund to achieve carbon goals.
Markham District Energy, The municipally owned energy company, is one of the only ones in Canada operating two sites in the same municipality; it’s also the fastest growing, and that growth is about to accelerate more thanks to the Canada Growth Fund. Markham District Energy currently runs two main sites, one in downtown Markham, powering the theatre building and the Marriott, and a few condo buildings in the area. The second site is located by the Hospital in Cornell and powers the hospital, community centre, firehall and surrounding medical buildings.
Announced this week, Markham District Energy entered into a 10-year contract with the Canada Growth Fund. The company will leverage this funding to implement the Wastewater Energy Transfer technology from Noventa Energy Partners Inc. As the cutting-edge solution for extracting thermal energy from wastewater; the system will extract thermal energy from nearby sewage, replacing older natural gas-based technologies. This will unlock further decarbonization opportunities across Canada, especially in the challenging low-grade heat sector.
According to Bruce Ander, CEO of MDE:
“This initiative will significantly cut our carbon emissions, helping us move toward becoming a net-zero carbon utility while ensuring our customers receive reliable and competitively priced thermal energy.”
