A long weekend in the city
Good Morning Markhamites,
The May long weekend is almost here. You can almost smell the BBQ and fireworks. Speaking of Fireworks, you won’t need a permit to light them this weekend, but their use is prohibited on city property. So I hope you have friends with a big backyard.
Today’s read time is less than 2 minutes, and our highlighted feature examines the evolution of Swan Lake from a gravel pit to an environmental rehabilitation Project.
Swan Lake (The Place, Not The Ballet)
Like a fairy tale, Swan Lake virtually appeared overnight. Once a former gravel pit, workers hit an underground aquifer and almost overnight, it was turned into a pristine lake. Well,This year Swan Lake is living up to its namesake. Six Swans visited Swan Lake this spring, hoping that at least two of them will make the lake their nesting grounds for the summer. With the active participation of our community, local conservation authorities have been busy at work documenting all of the swans in the area and were thrilled when two untagged juvenile swans showed up this spring. Friends of Swan Lake is asking anyone walking or enjoying the lake to send in any and all pictures of the swans nesting in the lake to their Facebook page. To participate, send a request to be a “friend” to admin@friendsofswanlakepark.ca.
In other Swan Lake news, the city confirmed that they are doing another chemical treatment to the water this summer to prevent algae buildup that has plagued the lake in recent years. The city and the Markham Lions Club also partnered to install nine tall bird feeders around the lake to encourage more diverse wildlife. As added protection for the swans, a fence around the lake will be installed as an action item in the 2025 city budget.
